HEC-HMS Element Display Properties

You can change the display properties of the following HEC-HMS elements shown on the Map View:

  • Subbasins
  • Subbasin TOC / Lag Time Flow Paths
  • Junctions
  • Reaches
  • Cross Sections
  • Storage Areas
  • Diversions
  • Sources
  • Sinks
  • and more…

To view or edit the display properties of different HEC-HMS elements, follow these steps:

  1. In the Map Data Layers panel, click on the […] Properties button of the HEC-HMS layer.
  2. The HEC-HMS Properties dialog box will be displayed.
  3. In the General Options tab, scroll down through the dialog box to see all the available display options. The following sections are available:
    1. Subbasin Display Properties
      Use this section to configure the display properties of subbasin elements. A subbasin represents the drainage catchment that receives rainfall during a storm event. You can configure display properties of these items:

      • Subbasin border: Turn display on/off, change color, change line thickness and style.
      • Subbasin IDs: Turn display on/off and change color.
      • Filled-in subbasin: Turn display on/off, change color and transparency.
    2. Subbasin TOC / Lag Time Flow Path Display Properties
      Use this section to configure the display properties of the subbasin TOC (time of concentration) and lag time flow paths. Typically, this flow path is the path that a drop of water would follow when travelling from the most hydrologically remote point to the outlet point of a catchment. You can configure display properties of these items:

      • Flow path: Turn display on/off, change line thickness and style.
      • Flow path IDs: Turn display on/off, change color and location of the label.
      • Flow path direction arrow: Turn display on/off and change color.
      • Sheet flow segment color: Change color.
      • Shallow concentrated flow segment color: Change color.
      • Channel flow segment color: Change color.
    3. Junction Display Properties
      Use this section to configure the display properties of junction elements. Junctions function to combine stream flow from multiple upstream hydrologic elements. You can configure display properties of these items:

      • Junction: Turn display on/off, change color, change icon’s size, type, border, and border color.
      • Junction IDs: Turn display on/off and change color.
    4. Reach Display Properties
      Use this section to configure the display properties of the routing reaches. Reaches are used for defining conveyance links, such as pipes, ditches, streams, rivers, etc. You can configure display properties of these items:

      • Reach: Turn display on/off, change line color, thickness, and style.
      • Reach IDs: Turn display on/off and change color.
      • Reach direction arrow: Turn display on/off and change color.
    5. Cross Section Display Properties
      Use this section to configure the display properties of routing reach cross sections. A cross section represents the geometry of the underlying terrain surface for the corresponding reach. You can configure display properties of these items:

      • Cross section: Turn display on/off, change color and location of the label.
      • Cross section IDs: Turn display on/off and change color.
      • Cross section direction arrow: Turn display on/off and change color.
      • Roughness segments: Turn display on/off and change line thickness.
      • Bank stations: Turn display on/off, change color, change icon’s size, type, border, and border color.
    6. Storage Area Display Properties
      Use this section to configure the display properties of storage area elements. A storage area element is used to model the detention and attenuation of a hydrograph caused by a reservoir or detention pond. You can configure display properties of these items:

      • Storage Area border: Turn display on/off, change color, change line thickness and style.
      • Storage Area IDs: Turn display on/off and change color.
      • Filled-in storage areas: Turn display on/off, change color and transparency.
    7. Diversion Display Properties
      Use this section to configure the display properties of diversion elements. Diversion elements are used to model stream flow leaving (or diverted from) the main channel. You can configure display properties of these items:

      • Diversion: Turn display on/off, change icon’s size, type, border, and border color.
      • Diversion IDs: Turn display on/off and change color.
    8. Source Display Properties
      Use this section to configure the display properties of source elements. Source elements are used to introduce flow into a basin model. You can configure the display properties of these items:

      • Source: Turn display on/off, change icon’s size, type, border, and border color.
      • Source IDs: Turn display on/off and change color.
    9. Sink Display Properties
      Use this section to configure the display properties of sink elements. Sink elements are used to represent an outlet from the basin model—such as a discharge point into a HEC-RAS river model. You can configure display properties of these items:

      • Sink: Turn display on/off, change icon’s size, type, border, and border color.
      • Sink IDs: Turn display on/off and change color.
    10. Other Display Properties
      Use this section to configure the following display properties of text labels:

      • Text label: Change size of text labels.
      • Text label offset: Change distance of text labels from the item.
      • Text label alignment: Change alignment of text labels with respect to the item.
  4. After configuring the above display settings, click the [OK] button to apply them on the Map View.

Note:

  • To restore the default display settings, click the [Default] button.
  • To restore the HEC-HMS labels to their default locations, click the [Reset Label Locations] button.
