Editing the Name of HEC-HMS Elements

GeoHECHMS allows the user to rename several HEC-HMS elements such as reaches, subbasins, junctions, storage areas, cross sections, diversions, sources and sinks. This knowledge base article addresses various ways in which a user can rename these entities.

The article has been divided into two sections. The first section explains various methods of editing a reach name. By following similar steps, the user can also rename subbasins, junctions, storage areas and cross sections. The second section explains various methods of editing a diversion name. By following similar steps, the user can also rename a source or a sink.

Editing of Reach/Subbasin/Junction/Storage Area/Cross Section ID

Described below are different ways by which the user can edit a reach name.

  1. Follow the step given below to edit a reach name from the Map View.
    1. The user can rename a reach by double clicking on the reach name on the Map View. There is no need to display the corresponding Reach Data dialog box.

  2. Follow the steps given below to edit a reach name using the Reach Data dialog box.
    1. To display the dialog box, either double click on the reach polyline from the Map View or select Reach Data from the Input ribbon menu.

    2. The Reach Data dialog box will be displayed.

    3. The Reach ID drop-down combo box can be used to select a different reach or to edit the existing reach name. To edit the selected reach name, click the pencil icon.

  3. Follow the steps given below to edit a reach name using the Edit Reach Names & Descriptions dialog box.
    1. From the Input ribbon menu, select Routing Reaches menu item, and then choose Edit Reach Names & Descriptions.

    2. The Edit Reach Names & Descriptions dialog box will be displayed.

    3. By double clicking on any of the reach names, the user can edit its name and can also edit the description.
      Note that by following similar steps, the user can rename a subbasin, junction and storage area.

Editing of Diversion/Source/Sink ID

Described below are different ways by which the user can edit a diversion name. Note that by following similar steps, the user can rename a source or a sink.

  1. Follow the step given below to edit a diversion name from the Map View.
    1. The user can rename a diversion by double clicking on the diversion name on the Map View. There is no need to display the corresponding Diversion Data dialog box.

  2. Follow the steps given below to edit a diversion name using the Diversion Data dialog box.
    1. To display the dialog box, either double click on the diversion from the Map View or select the Diversions menu item from the Input ribbon menu and then choose Diversion Data.

    2. The Diversion Data dialog box will be displayed.

    3. The Diversion ID drop-down combo box can be used to select a different diversion or to edit the existing diversion name. To edit the selected diversion name, click the pencil icon.

  3. Follow the steps given below to edit a diversion name using the Edit Diversion Names & Descriptions dialog box.
    1. From the Input ribbon menu, select the Diversions menu item, and then choose Edit Diversion Names & Descriptions.
